The Speyside Way could be linked with the East Highland Way to give a coast to coast walk. I think you've done a great job of explaining why this does not seem to be a popular option!
For a coast to coast walk I'd suggest taking the East Highland Way to Aviemore, then the Speyside Way to Grantown-on-Spey, then the Dava Way to Forres/Findhorn.
