Two videos on a new Fire Maple stove and whether pot sleeves are worth having.

Two recent videos on bits of gear I find interesting. I hope some of you do too!

  1. Hello Chris, Interesting and convincing experiment with the sleeve!

It might interest you that I have done a similar experiment 11 years ago with a self made pot cozy that I made with the type of aluminium coated bubble foil that gets used for insulation. This went all around my 1 liter Primus pot (including the bottom and top). Of course that is a much thicker layer than the sleeve that you tested, and it cannot be used during heating. I just bring water to a boil, then add rice or pasta meal and then place it into the pot cozy to let it hydrate. Ready to eat in 10 minutes.

I measured as graph of the temperature over time to see how well it keeps the temperature, and it turned out to work very well. Unfortunately I cannot post the graph here, but let me give you a few data points (temp in Celsius):
Time (minutes), Temp pot only (C), Temp pot in cozy (C):

    0:00, 98, 98
    1:00, 93, 96
    5:00, 86, 92
    10:00, 80, 89
    15:00, 75, 86
    30:00, 62, 77
    60:00, 49, 65

I'm still using it today. If it interests you, I can send you some pictures if you give me an email address to send it to.

    1. Many years ago I had a similar pot cosy (a commercial one, I didn't make it). When I stopped using the pot it fitted I never got another one. I don't know why as I remember it worked well though I didn't do any detailed tests like yours. Thanks for the reminder. I might make or buy another one now.

Thanks for emailing the graph and the picture.
